Pete Koneazny, litigation director for Legal Aid Society in Milwaukee, said his client had so many payday loans that he was paying off one to pay off the other. Shortly after that, he borrowed another loan to make another payment, taking out several loans to keep the first loan afloat. The client had between 12 and 20 loans, said Koneazny, who has communicated with about 50 clients from Milwaukee County over the last 2 1/2 years involved in class action lawsuits with payday loan companies and collection agencies. At least two lawmakers in Madison this session are sponsoring legislation to regulate the payday loan industry, including capping the loan amount and interest and limiting the number of times customers can rollover a loan. Josh Zepnick, D-Milwaukee, is sponsoring legislation that would limit the amount someone could borrow at one visit to a payday lender, restrict the number of "rollovers" and discourage turning the payday advance into a long-term loan. read more
