GOVERNMENTS in the Middle East need to close a huge “technology gap” in order to detect the information security breaches which could precede a 9/11 style attack, the managing director of telecommunications giant Zain said yesterday. Dr Saad Al Barrak was speaking on the second day of the Middle East Homeland and Global Security Forum being held at the Ritz-Carlton Bahrain Hotel and Spa. Answering a question from the floor after a session on telecommunications security, he said that governments in the region are lagging behind when it comes to the technology needed to effectively detect the online footprints of potential terrorists. I think we need to develop our IT resources in the government security apparatus and all of the government institutions - not only from the technology side but also in terms of training our people at the highest levels.
